3 common “protest” Protestants have for Our Lady.
Praise be Jesus Christ! Now & Forever!
Blessings to you all and may the grace of Our Father in Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you always in the Holy Spirit.
Our Lord invites us to take up our crosses each day and to follow Him, to walk with Him. On this earthly journey of ours on this side of the grave our purpose in this life is clear, we are to know God, love God and serve God in this life and to be with Him forever in the next life. A practical way to fulfill this is by keeping His Commandments (John 14:15) which can be summed up with 2 Commandments, Love God above all things and to Love your neighbor as you love yourself (Matthew 22:37-40). To love God above all things with you whole heart & whole mind is the greatest commandment but the 2nd one is like it however we must unpack the 2nd one a bit. In order for you to love your neighbor as you love yourself, this requires you to a.) love yourself and b.) love your neighbor as yourself. “Who is my neighbor?” This was the question that was asked when Our Lord responded with the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). We are to live ours lives in imitation of Christ, loving our neighbors who are within the sheepfold of the Church whether it be the Church Suffering (holy souls in Purgatory) the Church Militant (baptized believers here) or the Church Triumphant (Saints in Heaven). As the parable of the Good Samaritan implies we are called to even love those outside of the Church. On my journey walking the Lord I have encountered well meaning Protestants who love Christ but find it hard to love His Mother as if she is not considered a neighbor to love as yourself. Not only is she thy neighbor, if you consider yourself a “disciple whom Jesus loves” she is “thy Mother” whom your are to take into your home (John 19:26-27).
Here are 3 common "protest" most Protestant mistakenly have against Our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. I have personally encountered these "protest" or objections towards Our Lady.
1st Protestants protest; they assert Mary was just a vessel used by God for the Incarnation (to give birth to Jesus) & after Jesus started His ministry, Mary wasn't of any significance & not important so therefore should no longer be honored or considered Blessed.
2nd Protestant protest; they assert that there is no Scriptural basis for Mary to be called the Mother of God. Protestants always ask, "Where in the Bible can this be found?" They assume there is no Scriptural support for the title, "Mother of God".
3rd Protestant protest; they assert we should not ask the Blessed Mother or any of the Saints for any intercession & to only go to Jesus for intercession.
All three of these objections / protests were being raised by the so called “Reformers” during the Protestant Reformation 16 centuries later. I'm going to do my best to respond to each of them. It's my prayer and hope to clear up any confusion and present a good defense to these three issues and possibly prompt The Holy Spirit to move in the heart of any Protestant reading this post and consider the Journey Home to the Catholic Church.
Response to the 1st protest:
-The assertion that after Our Blessed Lord Jesus started His ministry (which was prompted by Mary's intercession John 2) there is no involvement from Mary; well I would like to call your attention to Luke 1:48, where we are told ALL GENERATIONS will call her Blessed. Not just the generation up to Our Blessed Lord's ministry. So that would include you & I as well as all the generations after us, throughout the end of all ages. Her significance had not ended after Jesus started His ministry. And in Luke 11:27 when the woman in the crowd yelled to Jesus, "Blessed is the one who bore you & nursed you." And Our Lord Jesus replied, "Rather Blessed are those who hear God's Word & keeps it." Our Lord isn't rebuking His Mother and saying she isn't Blessed, because that would contradict Luke 1:48 and as any faithful Bible believer knows, the Scriptures does not contradict itself. So when Our Blessed Lord Jesus responded that way, He was emphasizing that being attentive to God's Word and keeping it is greater than biological relationship. But now, who more than Mary heard God's Word and kept it? No one. In fact she heard God's Word, kept God's Word and gave birth to God's Word. Mary's Fiat in Luke 1:38 is what makes her one the very 1st people to accept Jesus Christ in her life, literally to be conceived in her womb, making her the 1st Disciple of Christ, thus hearing God's Word and keeping it. And that's why she is Blessed and will remain Blessed throughout ALL GENERATIONS.
Response to the 2nd protest:
-The assertion that there is no Scriptural basis to call Mary the Mother of God, isn't true. In light of Luke 1:43 we see Elizabeth under the inspiration of Holy Spirit, calls Mary, "the Mother of my Lord" and if we look at John 20:28, we see Jesus is called, "My Lord and MY GOD" by St. Thomas the Apostle. And I affirm 100% that Jesus is my Lord and MY GOD. Jesus is God made Flesh. Mary is the Mother of Jesus, therefore she is the Mother of my Lord & MY GOD, "the Mother of God" or as she is called in Greek, "Theotokos" which means God-bearer.

Response to the 3rd protest:
-The assertion that Only Jesus can be a mediator which is true since there is only One mediator between man and God and that is the man Christ, Jesus. However Jesus doesn't want us going to Him to ask for petitions and supplications only for ourselves. That would be selfish. We are to ask for petitions and supplications for everyone. See 1 Timothy 2:1. And when we ask Our Blessed Mother for her intercession, she is joining us in going to that One mediator who happens to be her Son. Now the protesting Protestant might say, "but Mary is dead and she can't hear us” and I would say, "you all are wrong because, Our God, is the God of the living and not of the dead." See Matthew 22:32, Mark 12:27 and Luke 20:38 and also take note of the Transfiguration where Our Blessed Lord spoke to Moses and Elijah in Matthew 17:1-7 and Luke 9:28-36.
Now that I showed the Scriptural basis for all three of these objections or protests, can we be shown the Scriptural basis that everything contained within the faith must be Scriptural? Sola Scriptura is a man made doctrine which was invented after the 16th century and is the root cause of countless denominations causing division up to this very day.
I pray this was helpful and edifying. May this post be efficacious and help out with any stumbling blocks or obstacles in the way of anyone considering becoming Catholic.
May the Lord Our God bless you and I. And
may Mary the Mother of the Word Incarnate pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our deaths.
